Keeping women safe

WOMEN FOR WOMEN: Gigi White, Michelle Keating (Mi Beds & Linen owner), Clr Sarah Wissler and Bronwin Spry Sawers.

WARD 23 councillor Sarah Wissler and Pastor André Klopper, from the NG Kerk, are jointly involved in a project which will ultimately help abused women who are seeking a safe place to stay until they can get help and move on with their lives.

This has been a dream of Wissler’s for many years that’s about to come true.

“We are very close to opening the safe house. We just need to finalise plans and then it will be all systems go,” said Klopper and Wissler. The house has been registered under the name Believe, as a non-profit company.

HUGE THANKS: Jorge Simoes, Clr Sarah Wissler and Claudio Simoes.

“The safe house hasn’t just happened – it has taken a lot of hard work and special people who have donated items for the home. To Jorge Simoes and Claudio Simoes from Comaro Paint and Hardware, a huge thanks for donating all the paint for inside and outside the house. Kitchen Factory in Chrisville for the brand-new kitchen. Devlin Signs, who gave a monetary donation. Michelle Keating from Mi Beds & Linen in Glenvista for the donation of a bed. And Carlton Butchery for their offer to donate meat on a monthly basis. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts,” said Sarah.

HELP AT HAND: Pastor André Klopper and Clr Sarah Wissler are opening a safe house for abused women.

For obvious reasons of safety, the location of the safe house can’t be divulged, but it is in Johannesburg South.

“This house won’t be a long-term stay for women who find themselves escaping an abusive relationship but a stopover, even if for a month, where the woman and child (or children) can find comfort and safety until they can organise a safe place to carry on with their lives.

“Many women find themselves in a threatening relationship but because they have nowhere else to go, they stay and put their and their children’s lives in danger,” added Wissler.
